New Mama Struggles... How do you deal?

Last night we had another young couple over who have a 9 month old little boy. He is the cutest thing ever and it was nice to be around another family who has been there done that. It's interesting to hear their take on being parents along with the struggles and challenges that accompany it. Sometimes when you think of a baby or the pending arrival, it's easier to focus on that sweet baby smell, the quiet moments of breastfeeding and the walks in the stroller. Sometimes it's easy to not think that in just a few weeks Phillip and I won't have enough time for each other, that I might not have a moment to shower in peace and SLEEP. Will we ever have that again?!

That was a big topic of discussion last night. Sleep deprivation. I know every baby is different but this family in particular struggles with that. Not this family - the one we had over last night. So the question is for all of you mamas out there... How do or did you deal with the struggles that come along with having a baby?

  1. Everything you're thinking about life with a baby will change once baby gets here. It's better! There are times when it is overwhelming, but you just take one day at a time. My husband and I worried about not having time for each other, and we just made time. Whether it was taking 15 minutes before bed to talk about our day or actually going on a date. You find ways to make each other feel important.

Once your little guy gets on a schedule, you'll find that you have time for yourself. I know you've probably heard this a lot, but if baby keeps you up at night, sleep during the day when he sleeps. it's so easy to just watch your baby sleep, but get rest when you can!

A lot of people will want to share their advice with you once baby comes, and that in itself is overwheleming. You just need to remember that you are a new mama and you'll figure things out as you go. You'll know what's better for your baby more than anybody else. :)

  2. I like the "figure things out as you go" advice. I have three kids and because of the gap in age between my 2nd and 3rd, I felt like I forgot a lot, but it came back to me little by little, or I would solicit advise, or I'd WING IT! You'll be surprised at how naturally things come. The tough times are short and go by so quickly that you'll blink and wonder where that first year went.

  3. I just came across your blog and was reading this post. I am a mother of 4 beautiful little boys. My oldest just turned 5 and my youngest is 2 months. I haven't had a whole lot of sleep in the past 5 years to say the least. It is a crazy life raising kids, especially boys, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. One way I have found joy in not getting much sleep is, I look at my baby in the middle of the night as I'm feeding him and I feel an overwhelming amount of love and joy for that special baby that I created. You talked about the last few weeks being just a special time for you and your little guy just to be one together. I felt the same way at the end of my pregnancy and I feel the same way in the middle of the night when I get to wake up and feed my little guy, just me!! I get to look at him and hold him because it is me he needs and I love that!!
