Organic Modernism

Organic modernism is a design term that's new to me. I stumbled upon some photos of this style on ApartmentTherapy.com and it rocked my world. For the longest time, when talking about the style I want for our home I would often say, "I want modern, clean, crisp but... I also want it to be super warm and inviting". I didn't know many other ways to describe it but I knew how I wanted my home to feel.

I want to walk in the door to a clean space. Something refreshing and uncluttered. However, sometimes the idea that comes to mind when thinking of modern décor is a sort of harshness. And I know that's not for me. I want a welcoming space that feels lived in, that makes you want to kick off your shoes and ahhhhhh - relax.

Enter Organic Modernism. It's just what my heart has been longing for. So if you're not familiar with this style. Take a look below and get a little inspired. It's all about the clean lines with life. Plants, and wood tones, and stones oh my. Who wouldn't want to roll around on the floor of these homes? I mean...

So what do you think?

p.s. be happy, it's almost Friday!!

p.s.s... so apparently pinterest doesn't want to work for me. I embedded a bunch of pics for you but if you don't see them check me out on pinterest here!

Houzzday: a new dining room

I am so loving having a place to settle down in after five years of moving around non-stop. I want my home to be a place to collect memories, spend time with friends and family and laugh over amazing dinners.

We decided to use the official dining room as a playroom for Cruze since it is the only area where his toys can be separate from the rest of the house while still in plain view. Instead, we will be using the kitchen eating area as our only dining space. Because of this, I want a space that can hold at least 6 people comfortably while being able to transition from casual to a tad more formal with not too much effort.

This is my little inspiration board for what will be our "dining room". I'm having so much fun picking things out for our new home and watching it all come together. Well... so far it's just the picking out part. I want it to be just right, so that means taking my time for each purchase.

Houzzday: A Little Playroom Inspiration

Okay so yesterday I mentioned that we are getting close to owning a home for the first time eva. It's funny how having a child can make your house dreams go from amazing closet, perfect kitchen, and a media room to the best playroom you can think up and a house that is baby-proofed just right. So the playroom. Well the house we are buying is actually one of the smallest ones we've seen during our hunting process. This means getting creative and organizing in a way to make it functional and practical. Since the rooms are on the small end we decided to use what should be the formal dining room, as a playroom. This means it's not concealed from the rest of the house. This also means, the design has to flow with the kitchen, living room, etc.

What I'm going for is a room that is clean, crisp, fun, COZY, has room for toys and a way to make those toys hidden. Thank goodness for Houzz.com and Pinterest because it's the perfect way to gather all of my ideas. I'm hoping this helps me execute them when the time comes.

Clean. Crisp. Bright.

I was the kind of kid who imagined what her house would look like when she grew up. How I would decorate it and what kind of feelings I would want it to stir up. Warmth. That's my goal. I want a house that feels cozy and makes you want to take off your shoes and roll around on the floor. yeah....

And although my ideas on décor have changed drastically over the years, one thing has stayed the same....

A Window Seat.

One way or another, I will get my window seat. And that might just be in the future playroom.

And all of this will be done on a budget. I cannot wait to share my progress along the way!

What do you think? Let's exchange some inspiration!

HouzzDay! Up High (ceilings)

You know those rooms that demand attention? The ones you walk into and need to take a moment to take it all in? Most likely it's because they are gorgeous from top to bottom and no detail was skipped. Including... The ceiling! And that's exactly what this weeks HouzzDay is about.

HOUZZDAY
Gorgeous from head to toe.

WALLPAPER - It's not common to see a room with a wallpapered ceiling but if it's the right pattern and texture it can look very elegant... just like the one below.

SMALL BUT MIGHTY - with a strong wall color and a dramtaic white ceiling this room demands attention am I right??

These rooms are probably out of my reach but it's great for inspiration. We are STILL househunting and it is EXHAUSTING. But when we do find something, thanks to HOUZZ I'll know exactly what I want.

HouzzDay: Wallz!

HOUZZDAY

It's HouzzDay and this week is all about WALLZ. A great way to wake up a room or add something unexpected that can make a room stunning and dramatic is to look past furniture, floors and regular paint.

I absolutely love these ideas below. YouTube even has some tutorials on how to create a brick wall. If done right, it can be absolutely beautiful and not as expensive as one might think.

I love the stone wall/fireplace. It's so warm and inviting!

My husband has mentioned several times that he is a fan of wood wall treatments. I have to say that I have seen it look horrible and... I have seen it look like this picture below. Perfect!

HouzzDay: Flooring and a link-up!!

I have NO idea what BLOGGER was busy doing last week but this post was scheduled for last Thursday and I just now realized it didn't publish. UGH.

So.... Better late than never? I'll go with that one. Sorry guys!

HOUZZDAY

It's the second HouzzDay on my blog and this weeks theme is FLOORING!

Here is what I've been loving lately:

Do you know what it is? If you said hardwood you are WRONG my friend. It's tile! Wood look tile to be exact and I'm digging it. I love the look of wood floors. It's warm and inviting. I makes me think of movie nights on the couch with me, Phillip and somewhere around  three kids (yes THREE). I makes me think of kiddie sleepover with sleeping bags all over the floor. These sorts of things. The problem? If I want wood everywhere (not really everywhere), even the high traffic spots, it will start to show signs of wear much quicker than tile. That's why this wood look tile is awesome. I've seen many different kinds and at first, I was not a fan. I thought it was cheesy, tacky and fake looking. But look at the floors above! THOSE are gorgeous. Right? RIGHT???

Next week: WALLZ!! Now this may seem to sbe imple and boring for you but do not be fooled. There is a TON you can do with a wall to wake up a room. Don't beleive me? Check out HOUZZ.COM and search "walls".

Want to link up? It's easy! Just write a design inspired post for HouzzDayand link up below. This linky will be open all week so you can always stop back in.

Tomorrow = HouzzDay

Tomorrow is HouzzDay.

HOUZZDAY

What is HouzzDay? It's a day to post about home related items. Last week was all about nightstands. What I love, wish I could have, and probably will settle on.

If you are into home design, feel free to join in on the fun. Simply write a decor/design related post. Be sure to check out HOUZZ.com, Pinterest and TheNest.com for great inspiration photos and link up tomorrow.

You can use my theme or pick whatever your heart desires. The most important thing is to DREAM big and hopefully you can inspire yourself and others. It's great to see what others would pick for their dream home and maybe it'll be something I can add to my LOOONG list of wants and must haves.

Check out last weeks post here

HouzzDay: Nightstand Inspiration / Link Up

I officially declare today... HOUZZDAY*!
And my first HOUZZDAY is all about nightstands

I've talked about how I can't wait to buy a new home so I can finally settle in somewhere and focus on creating a bedroom I can be proud of. Well, I don't know when that's going to happen and... my patience to redo my room is running thinnnn. So I'm not waiting anymore. And since I'm still on a itty bitty budget, I'm scouring the internet (mainly Houzz) for inspiration, to help narrow down what I really really want (for some reason I'm feeling like a spice girl right now), and to do it on a BUDGET.

First up is the nightstand. I already know what I want in a bed and have started working on that so I'm trying to finalize inspiration for my nightstand.

In my dreams.....

Closer to reality...

This last photo is a Ikea Rast Dresser hack. The dresser is $39.99 but it's raw (not painted). It's perfect for a DIY project. Here is one example from another blog. Her link is below the picture.

I love how something so simple and blah turned into that! I would probably go darker in the wood color (closer to a black stain) and I have some different ideas for drawer pulls. Stay tuned because I will be attempting my own creation in the coming weeks!

Do you have any other ideas for me to recreate a contemporary style dresser on the cheap? What do you think of the two toned look? Do you think I can pull off something closer to the above photos? Do share!

You can also link up to share your own HOUZZ ideas. Whatever decor kick you're on at the moment, I want to hear about it! The linky will be open for a week so feel free to join in and since I know this is super short notice (or none at all) I will have a new linky up next week!
